Book Creator

This year we had a great time creating items in Book Creator.  Our students became so proficient using this app that they starting typing in their stories. Here is an example of a student’s work who wrote about her time at the pool with her family.

Going Green Passion Project

As a result of our Persuasive Writing Unit, “Writers Write to Make the World Better”, our students became interested in recycling. They came up with the idea to have a recycling bin in our classroom.

UOS Writing Celebration

We use the Lucy Calkins’ Writing Units of Study and I truly believe that it challenges our kinders to be better writers. At the end of our how-to unit, we asked parents to help by taking pictures of their child showing something they knew how to do.  Then they brought the pictures to school and during Writer’s Workshop we added the written directions. We shared these for our Writing Celebration and our students loved being able to teach our guests how to do something.

Play Osmo

We have been using a gaming system called Play Osmo where the iPad serves as a reflective tool and students are engaged in hands-on play.  Here you see a student using the Tangrams app, where they are given a puzzle and must match the onscreen shapes using the tangram pieces. If a shape is positioned correctly it will change to a solid color on the iPad.

josephosmoThis has really helped us with shape orientation and understanding that shapes are still the same regardless of their position.  Another Play Osmo app that we love is Words! In the picture below you see a student playing this game with CVC words. Students are given an image on the iPad and must spell it using the letter tiles. One great feature of this app is the ability to create your own words/images to differentiate for your students. kaydenceosmo.jpg

Giving Thanks through Random Acts of Kindness!

November is a time to give thanks and what better way to show our gratitude than to be kind to others! It’s never too early to teach kids how to give back and Random Acts of Kindness is a great way for them to learn how to serve and help others.  Check out the list below which has a lot of simple ideas for kids.RAK2
